If you can answer YES to any of these questions, then attending lipreading class could help:
- Are you having difficulty following conversation?
- Do you sometimes feel cut off and isolated from conversations?
- Would you like to improve your communication skills?
- Would you like to meet other people in the same situation, in a friendly and supportive atmosphere?
Having a hearing loss can distort the sounds of speech, making it difficult to understand. Being able to lipread is invaluable and will help you considerably in ‘receiving’ the message. It can improve the way you communicate with other people and help you to regain your confidence in many situations. It can help you to overcome the isolation which can too easily result from having a hearing loss.
The best way to learn to lipread is to join a class, where you will be able to learn in a supportive atmosphere with other hard of hearing and deafened people. A tutor specifically qualified in teaching lipreading will encourage you to develop your skills to the best of your ability.
Deaf Direct runs classes in Herefordshire, Oxfordshire and Worcestershire, or we can signpost you to organisations in your area who deliver the courses. The classes are suitable for mixed ability beginners and improvers. If you are interested in joining a class please click here for a booking form.
