Lipreading

If you can answer YES to any of these questions, then attending lipreading class could help:

  • Are you having difficulty following conversation?
  • Do you sometimes feel cut off and isolated from conversations?
  • Would you like to improve your communication skills?
  • Would you like to meet other people in the same situation, in a friendly and supportive atmosphere?

Having a hearing loss makes speech sounds quieter or distorted or both. Lipreading is invaluable and will help you considerably in 'receiving' the message. It can help with communication as well as enable you to regain your confidence in many situations, and helps to overcome the isolation which can too easily result from having a hearing loss.

The best way to learn to lipread is to join a day or evening class, where you will be able to learn in a supportive atmosphere with other hard of hearing and deafened people. A trained teacher will encourage you to develop your skills to the best of your ability.

Deaf Direct runs classes in Herefordshire, or we can signpost you to organisations in your area who deliver the courses.
