The Level 6 NVQ Certificate in BSL provides proof of fluency in Sign Language and is essential for career or personal development and confidence for learners of BSL. The NVQ6 Portfolio Collection runs for six months. There are no higher BSL qualifications available currently, and level 6 follows on from level 3.
This course is specifically for those learners who wish to attain the NVQ6 qualification in British Sign Language. It is aimed at learners who have sign language skills assessed at the necessary standard to undertake the evidence collection for this level. Designed to guide you through the NVQ qualification structure, and enable you to collate a suitable portfolio of evidence to submit for verification.
This course is therefore suitable for learners who:
- Have completed Signature Level 3 and want to gain the NVQ Level 6 qualification
- Have recently completed a Level 6 Language Development course bringing them up to standard for collection of evidence for their NVQ Level 6 portfolio
- Have completed Level 3 some time ago and have maintained or built on this to bring them naturally up to NVQ Level 6 standard
- Are native sign language users, without formal signing qualifications, who wish to achieve the NVQ6, for personal achievement or because they require the qualification for work, eg adult children of deaf parents or sign language tutors
All applicants are informally interviewed and advised whether their sign language skills are of a suitable level to embark on evidence collection for a portfolio.
Course Content
This course covers all the necessary guidance and tutoring for you to complete the two required units to achieve the Signature Level 6 NVQ Certificate in British Sign Language (QCF). This follows the UK Occupational Language Standards (CILT, 2010), which define competent performance in British Sign Language (BSL) skills in both receptive and productive units. Candidates will provide evidence for both units of their ability to use BSL by compiling a portfolio. Both units are internally assessed by your Tutors and Verifiers. These units are:
BSL601 - Understand complex BSL in a wide range of work situations
Topics covered: receptive skills for understanding complex presentations in work and social contexts, including discussions, negotiations and debates, and handling a wide range of social interactions in different settings.
BSL602 - Use complex BSL in a wide range of work situations
Topics covered: productive skills of using complex language by giving presentations and taking part in discussions, negotiations and debates, and handling a wide range of social interactions in different settings.

Home study
In order to successfully compile your portfolio and demonstrate competence in the language, you will be required to undertake home study tasks and evidence collection. You will be guided by your tutor as to these tasks and timescales, and will be expected to film some of your evidence pieces outside of the classroom environment.
Course Fees
Course fees are £1,125, payable on enrolment. There are no hidden costs; this payment includes all tuition fees and materials supplied, as well as internal verification of your portfolio during the course and certification by Signature. We are able to offer an easy payment option if required: a £525 deposit payable at enrolment and a standing order for two further monthly payments of £300 each.
Assessment
The aim of this course is to collect appropriate evidence to collate a portfolio for NVQ6 BSL. This will be assessed in line with national standards as part of your course, and you will be issued with a qualification certificate following successful assessment of your portfolio. The course fees include all assessment costs.
