Want to consolidate your fluency in BSL? This is the course for you!
This course is aimed at a range of learners who have sign language skills at a minimum of Level 3. Many learners will want to go on to undertake the NVQ6 on completion of this course, whilst others may simply want to attend to improve their sign language skills without wanting to achieve further qualifications. This advanced level of tutoring is ideal for anyone wanting to achieve true fluency in British Sign Language.
This course is suitable for learners who:
- Have completed Level 3 NVQ Certificate in BSL and want to maintain and develop their signing skills, with or without going on to further qualification
- Want to improve their signing to prepare for collecting evidence for their NVQ Level 6 portfolio
- Are native sign language users, without formal signing qualifications, who wish to achieve the NVQ6, for personal achievement or because they require the qualification for work, eg adult children of deaf parents or sign language tutors
- Wish to further their careers or personal development such as Sign Language Interpreters and Communication Support Workers
Course Content
This is an advanced level course and as such the complexity of the language and attention in a small group will enable you to increase your natural production of BSL and understanding of the language and its structure.
Including a comprehensive language development programme, you will improve and practice vocabulary and language skills from level 3, build on your grammatical fluency and increase your competence and comprehension generally in BSL. You will also work on your pace and flow of sign language production. The course aims to build your confidence and overall fluency so that you will complete the programme a more adept BSL user than when you started!
Taught in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre in Oxford, this course will immerse you in a deaf environment and utilise an extensive resource base from range of native signers. With an excellent quality of teaching using cutting edge methods you will be given the very best opportunities to flourish as a BSL user.
Home study
Learners who put in the extra time and effort outside of class inevitably get a lot more from the course; their language skills tend to develop more quickly than those who don’t. If you intend to go on to the NVQ6 course home study at this stage is absolutely essential. There are a wide range of activities suitable for home study and most of them not only help you to learn but they’re interesting, and fun too. The best way to develop BSL skills is to engage with deaf sign language users; however there are many, many ways to practice. You will be assigned home work tasks and directed towards resources to utilise outside of the classroom, and should expect to undertake a couple of practice tasks per week.
More information and ideas about ways to practice your sign language can be found under Training & Awareness > Practising Your BSL.
Course Fees
Course fees are £875, payable on enrolment. There are no hidden costs; this payment includes all tuition fees and materials supplied during the course. Where required, we are able to offer an easy payment option: a £275 deposit is payable at enrolment and a standing order form must be completed and signed to arrange two further monthly payments of £300 each.

This is a preparatory course and as such is not formally assessed. The course tutor will be able to advise you of your development during the course and your suitability to advance to the NVQ Level 6 if you wish to do so. There will be a tutor assessment at the end of this course for all students, regardless of whether you wish to progress to NVQ6 Portfolio Collection.
