Thursfields Solicitors and Charity Commission
On Friday 27th January, Philip Gerrard, Deaf Direct’s CEO, met with Rachael Silcock from the Charity Commission to discuss how their processes can be improved to help smaller charities.
The event was hosted locally at Thursfields Solicitors and gave Deaf Direct the opportunity to ensure the Charity Commission’s systems are accessible to deaf people. For example, the Annual Returns process enables a charity to speak to an advisor on the telephone while completing the form online – but this is not accessible for deaf people. Philip made the suggestion that this process needs to have a live text chat option, or a Skype option, so that deaf people completing the form receive the same amount of support as hearing people.
We are pleased that Deaf Direct was able to represent the needs of deaf people to the Charity Commission and thank Thursfields for inviting us to this event.
