September’s Hard of Hearing Group session in Worcester
By Shelagh Young, Volunteer
On the second Friday, the 12th of September, the Worcester Hard of Hearing Group was joined by two very important visitors. Barbara Ward, a deafened client and volunteer of Deaf Direct in Herefordshire, and Barbara’s Hearing Dog for the Deaf, Elvis! Barbara attended the session to share her personal experience of having a cochlear implant fitted and being paired with Elvis; both of which have enhanced Barbara’s life.
Barbara told the group how her hearing suddenly deteriorated over a few months after having a hearing loss in one ear since birth, the decision process Barbara went through to have a cochlear implant fitted, and the impact the cochlear implant had on Barbara’s life.
Elvis is a loveable three year old miniature black poodle, who was not fazed by the goings on around him that day. Barbara explained in detail how Elvis had just completed his intensive training programme and it is safe to say we all went home great fans of Elvis!
It was clear to see and imperative for me to convey here in this article, that not only is Elvis Barbara’s ears, but also her life companion too; they are the best of friends which is wonderful to see! We thank Barbara for sharing this lovely story with us.
If you would like any further information about cochlear implants or Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, please contact the Information Team at Deaf Direct, or come along on the second Friday of every month to join in the fun.
