Our Deaf Direct Coffee Morning group attended a workshop on how to avoid scams, which is frighteningly on the increase. This was presented by PC Rukhsana Machin and PC Dave Wise of the West Mercia Police Constabulary at the Heart of Worcestershire College on 7th February. It showed two videos on “Cyber Security* (https://goo.gl/lMzgt5) featuring the pitfalls/traps of losing money in various devious ways like HMRC refunds, false company invoices, etc.
The other was a “Scam Awareness” video in BSL by the Lancashire Police Constabulary (click here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mowmOlOfeaQ) showing the possible threats with examples like people thinking they have won a £100,000 lottery prize, winning a fabulous holiday, adopting a child, seeking love or friendship, buying things which are never sent to you after you paid, etc.
Lots of useful questions were answered clearly. The group came out more knowledgeable and wiser.
Our thanks to Rukhsana and Dave plus Tessa the interpreter for making it worthwhile.
