Pedius App for Deaf people
Pedius is a creative new app that gives D/deaf and hard of hearing people the independence and freedom to have real-time conversations.
For example to call a plumber, book a table at your favourite restaurant, or talk to your Outreach Support worker at Deaf Direct by using either on Apple or Android smartphone – and without a third party being involved in the call.
How it’s work?
The app uses voice recognition software to translate spoken words to text and voice versa. The user can either type or speak to start a conversation and the person at the other end will get a transcript of the conversation to reply to. The service can be used for 20 minutes free per month before it has to be paid for – you choose your preferred payment option at the time of download. Call charges are the same as usual.
Because Pedius relies on automated voice recognition – a technology that’s still evolving, you may prefer to still use the NGT Service for more important conversations such as with your bank. There’s also no charge for using the NGT Service, only the standard cost of each call.
See a deaf user demonstrating Pedius on YouTube. It’s a signed video, and subtitles are available too – just click on the ‘CC’ box (closed captions).
