Online interpreting services
By Philip Gerrard, CEO
Deaf Direct is working closely with Interpreter Now as one of three providers for their remote interpreting services. They are close to finalising the details of a one year project to deliver online interpreting nationally for a key health contract. This is not the same as the open access online interpreting we ran last year. We are starting the process of recruiting interpreters to the team to deliver this work, because the shifts will run from 8am to 12 midnight everyday (including Christmas day!) and we do not have the capacity in the team to deliver this.
This is an exciting opportunity, and we hope to see online interpreting work develop more over the coming years. However, at the moment we do not have all the details to share with you. As soon as we do, we will let you know.
Scotland video relay service
By Tessa Slaughter, Senior Interpreter
There is news currently going around social media about a Scotland video relay service for public services. The interpreters are provided by Sign Language Interactions, based in Glasgow. They are a delivery partner for Interpreter Now, as are Deaf Direct. We are working closely with them for another project in England. We are keeping a keen eye on developments in Scotland, and hope that deaf people there will see improvements to access for public services as a result of this commitment by the Scottish Parliament.
