New Student- Jenna
|Hello, my name is Jenna! I am 21, and I was born and brought up in Scotland, near Glasgow. I am in my third year of studying BSL interpretation at Heriot Watt University, in Edinburgh.
Before I started University, I had only basic BSL- I knew my numbers, and fingerspelling, and that was about it! I started learning BSL during my last year at school- I always struggled to find subjects I really liked, so I decided as part of my last year, to do a work experience placement in a special needs school. I went once a week for a year, and was placed in a class of five children, aged 6-9. They had varying needs, ranging from Autism to Down’s Syndrome, but one boy in the class was deaf, and used sign language. At the time I didn’t know any BSL, but was determined to learn! As a result, I started a level one, part one evening class at my local college, and really enjoyed it. When it came to applying for University, I was completely clueless, and one day I was hopelessly flicking through the many prospectuses, when the BSL course at Heriot Watt jumped out at me.
I am here on placement at Deaf Direct for three months, finishing around early April. Before moving here, I had never been to Worcester, I didn’t even know where it was on a map, so had no idea what to expect! It is very quiet, especially after my last placement in London, at Red Bee. But it is a nice change of pace from London life.
While I’m here at Deaf Direct, my main aim is to improve my signing, ready to go back for my final year of University in September!
