Getting to Know You – Michael Ward, Outreach Worker
|What is your job title?
What do you do on an average day at work?
Encourage and assist a client to have an independent life, go out to social clubs, shopping, restaurants, go to hospital or visit his family. I regularly drive a mobility car to escort a client to a requested place.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Some days my client can be challenging but others he can be lovely. When he is happy, I am a happy man!
Why do you work for Deaf Direct or what is your connection to deafness?
I am a proudly deaf guy from Greater Manchester. I have lots of experience in mental health and assisting clients. In Birmingham, there are few deaf young males with this sort of experience. I had job offers for a variety of support worker roles with other companies as well as Deaf Direct. After meeting some people and being interviewed, I chose Deaf Direct through my gut feeling; I thought Deaf Direct would be a good organisation to work for. I have no regrets as I have fantastic support from Alex Gerrard (DD Outreach Worker) and the staff from Deaf Direct.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?
I am a big fan of Japanese manga comics, and have degrees in Digital Media Design and Animation. I love playing sports, especially climbing, cycling, volleyball and squash.
