Getting to Know You – Dawn Barker, Freelance Interpreter for Deaf Direct
What do you like about being a Sign Language Interpreter?
I love what I do! I am really good at getting information across, I am good with people and I appreciate the role I play. The job itself is highly skilled, enjoyable and sometimes nerve-wracking!
What is a ‘typical’ day?
There is no such thing! Every day there will be numerous emails requesting an interpreter for things like health appointments (often last minute!) and for work all over the place. There is always a challenge to work out which jobs I can take, thinking about suitability, travel, timing and what to wear! I also have to do all my own admin work so spend one day a week doing that.
What do you like about working for Deaf Direct?
Deaf Direct is always respectful; they understand fully how difficult the job is and will support me 110%. They are locally based, with an ethos of professionalism and mutual respect. There is never a feeling of ‘them and us’; I am never treated as an outsider or inferior: we are all on the same side. They believe in me, and will pass on feedback which as a lone worker is really valuable. Debra (Bookings Coordinator) never lets me down, when I have concerns she is always supportive and I never feel alone when I work for Deaf Direct.
