European Union of the Deaf (EUD)
The European Union of the Deaf (EUD) began in 1985, where its first GA (General Assembly) was held in London, although they are now based in Brussels, Belgium. It is EUD’s vision that Deaf people all over Europe have equality in both public and private aspects of life. Its main funding is from the European Commission.
There is so much work going in in Europe that you may not be aware of, this is a fantastic organisation that works on behalf of and for the benefit of all 28 EU Member States and also including Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.
If you want to watch fantastic clips of people using International Sign language and learn more, then please do take a look at the website. All videos are subtitled so you can learn more about what they are, what they have achieved so far and not forgetting the projects they are currently involved in. You may even notice faces on the videos that have a familiarity about them; Mark Wheatley (Executive Director) who is our own CEO’s cousin and David Hay (Communication & Media Officer) who is the younger brother of Gordon Hay.
