Debra’s personal challenge leads to a charity challenge
On 16th October Debra Berbezier will be taking on the Great Birmingham Run to help local hearing loss charity Deaf Direct. The charity provides communication assistance (including British Sign Language interpreters), community support workers, training, information and equipment to help people manage their hearing loss and move forward with life. This equipment can include flashing fire alarms and doorbells, personal listeners to help a person to hear the TV and amplified telephones so that conversations with loved ones are no longer a problem.
The challenge has added poignancy for Debra as it marks the culmination of her own personal journey to lose weight and get fit.
Debra explains – “Just over a year ago I was morbidly obese. I had terrible back pain and never exercised. I decided to join a local Slimming World Group and that gave me the motivation to join a gym. I then decided to try the Couch to 5K programme and I went from not being able to run at all, to running 5K without stopping in 9 weeks. I have since run 10Ks and I’m really looking forward to the Great Birmingham Run – a half marathon! I am 8 stone lighter and couldn’t be happier.
As a Trainee Interpreter for Deaf Direct, I know how vital their work is in breaking down communication barriers for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. I therefore decided to add an extra element to my own personal challenge by fundraising for them. With a reduction in traditional funding sources, it’s really important that people fundraise and donate to small, local charities who need their help.
Deaf Direct transforms people’s lives and I have transformed mine in the past year – I can’t wait to reach the finishing line on 16th knowing the funds I raise will be able to help another person.”
Philip Gerrard, CEO of Deaf Direct said “We are extremely grateful to Debra for raising funds for us and for taking up this challenge. Without people like Debra, we would not be able to continue helping all the people with hearing loss who need us. 1 in 6 people in the UK is living with a hearing loss – it could be your grandparents, parents or children. We are always looking for local individuals or businesses who want to help those living with hearing loss and their families. Huge thanks go to Debra and we will be rooting for her on 16th!”
