Deaf Direct –“ promoting the place in the community of people who are deaf and hard of hearing and resident in the dioceses of Herefordshire, Oxfordshire or Worcestershire, raising awareness of their rights and responsibilities and ensuring access to all services.”
Deaf Direct has its roots in a meeting that took place in September 1935. The meeting was convened in order to reorganise and redefine the Mission for the Deaf, which had been set up locally in 1927. Such reorganisation was necessary in order to raise more funds to enable a full time Missionary for the Deaf to be appointed.
This meeting led to the formation of the Worcestershire and Herefordshire Council in Aid of the Deaf and Dumb its principle objects defined as:
To deal with all matters social and religious connected with deaf people.
To undertake “placement” work in the two dioceses.
To assist the deaf in obtaining employment and to help deal with the day-to-day problems as they occurred.
