Deaf Direct has centres in Herefordshire and Worcestershire and is the only charitable organisation providing services for deaf and hard of hearing people across the two counties. The services we deliver are essential in promoting equality of opportunity and facilitating independence amongst deaf and hard of hearing people. We provide essential answers to questions such as:
“Where can I get support and meet other people with similar experiences?”
Deaf Direct supports a range of local self-help groups and facilitates local meetings such as Herefordshire Tinnitus Self Help Group. Meeting other people in similar situations to your own provides a valuable opportunity to share experiences.
“As a sign language user, how do I get information that is relevant and accessible to me?”
We offer information, advice and guidance service delivered by staff fluent in British Sign Language (BSL).
“Where can I get essential equipment?”
Our Hereford office has equipment displays including, for example, flashing door bells and amplified telephones for clients to try out, as well as equipment to hire, such as loop systems. We also have established referral processes to social services or routes to buy equipment privately.
“What is there for my deaf child to do?”
We organise various events for deaf children and their families including annual residential summer camp, day trips, monthly craft clubs and activity weekends. It is essential for deaf children to have social opportunities equal to their hearing peers to prevent feelings of marginalisation at such an early age.
“Who is talking to service providers on our behalf?”
We represent the local deaf and hard of hearing communities on various local initiatives to ensure their needs are met within local policies and procedures.
“I need to go to the doctors but they can’t use sign language – how can we communicate?”
Deaf Direct provides BSL / English interpreters, lipspeakers and notetakers. These services are requested in many fields including education, employment, finance, health, legal and social services.
