BSL Level 1
    Course Description
    • This nationally recognised qualification is ideal for people with little or no experience in Sign Language and is designed to enable learners to communicate with Deaf people on a range of topics that involve simple everyday language use.
    Course Content
    • BSL 101 is designed as an introduction and should be completed first, BSL 102 & 103 can be completed in any order. Candidates must achieve all three units for the full qualification. Assessment is built into the learning time of each unit.
    • BSL 101-Introduction to BSL. Equips learners to understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences e.g. greetings and numbers
    • BSL 102-Conversational BSL. Equips learners to take part in simple, predictable conversations or instructions in BSL in relation to activities at home e.g. using numbers, describing interest and commenting on the weather.
    • BSL 103-BSL at School, College or Work. Equips learners to take part in simple, predictable conversations or instructions in BSL in relation to activities at work/school/college e.g. describing the building, activities carried out, transport used, directions.
BSL Level 2

Course Description

  • This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop an ability to communicate with Deaf people using BSL in a range of familiar contexts, participating in longer and more open ended exchange than at Level 1. The course will develop functional communication in BSL about a range of real life, routine and daily experiences. The learner will be able to deal with most routine language tasks and have sufficient grasp of grammar to cope with some non-routine tasks.

Course Content

  • Units BSL 201 and Unit 202 are designed to build on vocabulary from Level 1 and will be run concurrently. Candidates must achieve all three units for the full qualification.
  • BSL 201-Receptive BSL. Enables learners to demonstrate their understanding of routine language in everyday situations expressed through simple sentence structures and set phrases in the form of a narrative.
  • BSL 202-Productive BSL. Enables learners to demonstrate their use of routine language in everyday situations expressed through simple sentence structures and set phrases in the form of a presentation.
  • BSL 203-Conversational BSL. Allows learners to demonstrate that they can hold a routine conversation by using and understanding language expressed through simple sentence structures and set phrases, expressing views and/or clarifying understanding.
BSL Level 3

Course Description

  • This qualification is designed to meet the training needs of those who already have knowledge and skills in BSL at Level 2.The content of the qualification is based around 5 themes. In order to develop a suitable range of vocabulary for this level, all learners will study the first two themes, and one from the remaining three.
    • Theme 1 will provide evidence for the Knowledge and Skills requirements of the award (mandatory)
    • Theme 2 – Society (mandatory)
    • Theme 3 – Education (optional)
    • Theme 4 – Health (optional)
    • Theme 5 – The Workplace (optional)Candidates must achieve both units for the full qualification.
    • Assessment is built into the learning time of each unit.

Course Content

  • BSL 301-Sign Language Receptive Skills. Receptive skills relating to issues and concerns in social or work-related contexts, including following uncomplicated negotiations and understanding the main point of interviews, documentaries and most social conversation.
  • BSL 302-Sign Language Productive Skills. Productive skills relating to issues and concerns in social or work-related contexts, including following uncomplicated negotiations, exchanging and presenting information.
Deaf Awareness
This course offers students the opportunity to gain introductory-level knowledge and understanding of deafness. The courses can be tailored to suit the needs of your organisation, ranging from 1.5 hour 'taster' courses for GPs on their lunch break to full day sessions including basic BSL.
Communication Tactics
Offering basic skills for communicating effectively and confidently with deaf or deafblind people, this course is ideal for 'frontline' workers, such as reception staff, and requires no prior training.
